SUSTAINABILITY

The benefits of sustainability include protecting natural resources and ecosystems, reducing waste and emissions, improving social and economic equity, and promoting long-term economic and environmental stability. Sustainable practices can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and support a more resilient and equitable society for all. Additional benefits extend beyond recyclability.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Using resources effectively and consciously has a much more positive impact on the ongoing environmental system. Recycling, water and energy conservation, and reducing carbon footprint are among the potential solutions for maintaining systemic efficiency.

CLIMATE ACTION

The United Nations has declared climate change the greatest threat to development(i), while the World Economic Forum has described it as “a serious existential risk to our world.”(ii)

Climate change contributes to extreme weather events, major natural disasters, and rising sea levels.

Climate change threatens to disrupt the balance of ecosystems, harming food production on land and sea. Those most at risk are the world's poorest and most vulnerable communities. Where one-third of the planet's population lives in water-stressed countries, one-third of arable land has been eroded. Projected global population growth and climate change are among the factors accelerating conflict and human displacement.(iii)

2016 was the warmest year on record, 1.10°C above the pre-industrial period. This temperature is also 0.06°C above the record high set in 2015. Global sea ice surface has fallen below average by 4 million km², sea levels have risen, and average global sea temperatures have reached record levels.(iv)

As carbon dioxide reaches an average annual concentration of 400 parts per million in the atmosphere, the impact of human activities on the climate system has become increasingly evident.(v)

How does this goal relate to businesses?

For sustainable economic growth, the world must transition to a low-carbon economy. Climate change is already paving the way for extreme weather events, natural disasters, and rising sea levels. As temperatures rise, the threat to ecological systems also places significant pressures on society and the economic system.

Regardless of whether individuals contribute to the science behind climate change, policymakers are taking action to reduce emissions. Markets, investors, and consumers are increasingly demanding that companies take action to reduce their carbon footprints. The goal is to further change regulatory rules, allowing companies to reposition themselves with new business models, innovation, and technology.

With the rise of corporate advocacy, companies are increasingly pressured to address climate change and its risks. Many investors with assets worth tens of trillions have signed up to climate-related actions and commitments, such as the UN's Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), the Montreal Climate Pledge, the Divestment from Fossil Fuels Pledges, and the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition.

Action on climate change will become an increasingly powerful commercial issue as it becomes a greater reputational issue.

What can businesses do?

It is up to businesses to be as efficient as possible, to be informed and to build resilience into their supply chains.

One positive step companies can take in this direction is, quite clearly, to reduce their carbon footprint and help their customers and suppliers do the same. This includes using low-emission energy sources and renewables.

Considering the severe weather events and disasters that occur around the world, all businesses need to develop emergency plans.

Companies that are highly aware and prepared are more likely to address climate change than those that avoid taking action for short-term gains. Managers should consider their responsibilities in this regard.

Climate change is not a political or ideological issue and businesses have a responsibility to take action by taking a public stance on this issue.
